Macbeth

  • DANCE

The Royal New Zealand Ballet
Choreographed by Alice Topp

Choreographer Alice Topp brings naked ambition, politics and transgression to the fore in an explosion of contemporary ballet with this new, original staging — propelling Shakespeare’s iconic characters into a shadowy world of manipulation, boardroom intrigue and violence.

As the Macbeths emerge as the new power couple atop a glamorous social set, the view from the top is dizzying — and the fall steep. The seduction of success turns to doubt, paranoia and madness, with mesmerising movement set to Christopher Gordon’s pounding new score, layering full orchestral and heavy metal with live string octet, driving Macbeth and his Lady to a conclusion that is as inevitable as it is devastating.
