Q’s main performance space is a state of the art flexiform auditorium. It provides artists with inspiration and challenges them to engage audiences in different ways.
Rangatira is a highly adaptable space. It gives designers the capability to reconfigure both the stage and seating to suit the needs of a given production. It accommodates a wide variety of artistic events including dance, drama, comedy, music and multi-media art events.
Citizen Q at Q Theatre
Open 90 minutes before show start times Q Theatre’s café and bar, Citizen Q, is a popular pre-show destination. Their comfortable lounge is perfect for a pre and post show drink, a delicious cocktail or a light snacks to keep you going through the festival.
Q is a 20 minute walk from Britomart Train Station and several different bus routes have stops right outside the venue on Queen Street. For train and bus routes to Q, please visit Auckland Transport’s website and type in 305 Queen Street, Auckland Central as your destination.

Venue accessibility
Q Rangatira Theatre Q is located at 305 Queen Street, Auckland Central. We have two public entrances. The main entrance on Queen Street is wheelchair accessible and leads straight into Q’s Lounge, where you can enter an elevator that gives you access to each level of the building. The second entrance is via the Lower Greys Avenue car park, up a flight of external stairs. Once inside, there is a set of internal stairs and an elevator, both of which provide access to each level of the building.
The venues within Q Theatre are across four levels, with all levels in the building accessible via a central lift. Rangatira stalls have one row of level access. Balcony is all level access. Gods has two sections of level access, with Block A (the centre one) being on two tiers. Bar is all level access from the Queen St entrance.
Step free access, and wheelchair accessible seating and toilets available
There are accessible toilets and baby changing facilities on the Lower Ground Level and Level 2. Wheelchair-accessible toilets can be reached by taking the elevator to either level. Q Theatre has one wheelchair available for loan. Door sizes for the accessible toilets:
Male and female accessible toilets on the lower ground floor (lift accessible): 800mm wide door
Gender-neutral accessible toilets on the second floor (lift accessible): The door into the gender-neutral bathroom area and disabled toilet are both 760 mm wide.
Hearing Loop
Rangatira and Loft are both fitted with an audio loop. However, the sound quality can vary through Rangatira, so those who require this loop should ring Q’s box office (09 309 9771) for advice on the best seats for any particular show.
Service dogs are welcomed
For any questions about the best places to sit with your service animal, please ring Q’s box office on 09 309 9771. There is a large section of grass located in Aotea Square, not far from Q Theatre. Staff will provide water for service dogs on request.
Mobility Carparks nearby
When parking in the Civic Car Park, look for the “Town Hall Stairs” exit, which has elevator access. The distance from the elevator to our stair-free Queen Street entrance is approx. 190 metres (250 steps) and from the elevator to our staired Lower Greys Ave entrance is approx. 150 metres (194 steps). There is also a 30-minute mobility park on Queen Street, directly outside Auckland Town Hall (40 metres from our Queen Street entrance). There is another mobility parking area (180 minutes) on Queen Street, near the corner of Wakefield Street and on the opposite side of the road from Q.
Drop off points There is a loading bay on Queen Street, outside The Classic Comedy Club (40 metres from our Queen Street entrance). If this loading zone is full, there is also a 30-minute mobility park on Queen Street, directly outside Auckland Town Hall (40 metres from our Queen Street entrance). There’s a drop-off area at the rear of Q Theatre, located in the Lower Greys Ave Car Park (staired entrance). There is a step-free route back to the main entrance of Q Theatre travelling via Aotea Square, turning right at the Town Hall and continuing up to the Queen Street entrance.
